North Jersey Community Educator
New Jersey Citizen Action, the state's largest independent citizen watchdog coalition, is hiring a full-time Northern New Jersey Community Educator. Working under the direction of the Program Director, staff will reach out to targeted constituencies to educate consumers about financial literacy, lead poisoning prevention, and other state and national issues. Staff will concentrate their efforts in Northern and Central New Jersey's low and moderate-income communities, providing information and resources to help consumers empower themselves and improve the quality of life for their families.![]()
Examples of Work
- Contact organizations to schedule presentations.
- Confirm presentations and secure directions.
- Provide organizations with materials prior to presentation (bios, background info).
- Conduct presentations on a number of consumer topics including energy conservation, telecommunications, financial literacy, school vouchers and lead poisoning prevention.
- Inform consumers of the work of NJCA on other issues of consumers' rights
- Develop statewide organizational contact database.
- Promote educational services through free media.
- Write and distribute public service announcements about presentations.
- Work with other program staff and participate in NJCA organizational events.

Knowledge and Abilities
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, especially public speaking.
- Ability to be self-directed, develop and maintain priorities and conduct multiple tasks in a given timeframe.
- Ability to develop contacts and schedule presentations.
- Exceptional time management and planning expertise.
- General computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office, word processing and database applications.
- Ability to become proficient in the areas of utility issues, laws and regulations, financial literacy issues (credit, predatory lending, basic banking and budgeting) and lead poisoning prevention.

Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (life experience may be substituted for education on a year-by-year basis).
- Experience working in low and moderate income communities.
- Bi-lingual in English and Spanish a plus.
- Outreach staff must have their own car and valid license and insurance.
