Newark, NJ – On Wednesday, January 20, Phyllis Salowe-Kaye, Executive Director of New Jersey Citizen Action, Congressman Donald Payne Jr., Assemblywoman Sheila Oliver, Assemblyman Jamel Holley, Newark Council President Mildred Crump, Internal Revenue service (IRS), and community partners will mark the Annual Opening of NJCA’s Tax Center located at 165 Halsey Street, Newark, NJ 07102. The event will kick off with a press conference at 10:30 a.m. There will be photo opportunities with clients receiving free services at the event.
NJCA’s Tax Center provides families earning less than $54,000 with free quality tax preparation, allowing New Jersey taxpayers to receive their refunds in a timely fashion. Over the past 10 years, NJCA has helped more than 26,000 New Jerseyans claim $40.5 million in refunds of which $15 million were Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) refunds. Unfortunately, 1 in 5 New Jerseyans eligible for the credit does not claim it, leaving tens of millions of dollars on the table. NJCA also provides in-person healthcare enrollment assistance to connect uninsured individuals to affordable health care coverage options under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) throughout the year.
According to the IRS 2016 EITC Income Limits, the income threshold for married filing jointly with three or more children is $53,505. The U.S. Census Bureau’s 2014 American Community Survey estimates New Jersey median income at $72,062. However, the median income precipitously drops for African Americans ($46,640) and Latinos ($49,097).
