Summary: Director of Organizing / Lead Organizer

New Jersey Citizen Action (NJCA) has an immediate opening for a Director of Organizing / Lead Organizer for our Debt Free Student Campaigns. Candidates must have six or more years of organizing experience and be committed to progressive values and the discipline of organizing to build power for progressive change.  New Jersey Citizen Action puts progressive values into action through grassroots and coalition organizing; policy advocacy and lobbying; free services for low and moderate income families; community education; and electoral advocacy.

This year, we are prioritizing our work in a number of areas:

  • Health Care Justice and Reform: to expand health coverage for all New Jerseyans including immigrants; lowering health care costs to increase affordability; and preventing drug and alcohol addiction among teens.
  • A Stronger, Fairer Economy: to win adoption of a millionaire’s tax to those earning $1 million or more; reform the state’s corporate subsidy program to ensure it is affordable and beneficial to NJ taxpayers; and win adoption of a state bank that invests in socially beneficial projects. 
  • Student Financial Fairness and Protection: to protect student borrowers from unfair or abusive student loan servicers and establish a Student Loan Ombudsman and to ensure for – profit colleges are delivering quality education and a path to employment, at affordable prices.
  • Progressive Unity Building: NJCA works to support progressive efforts led by others to bolster their chance of success. This year these efforts include legalization and de-criminalization of marijuana possession in New Jersey, ending wage theft, ensuring immigrant access to driver’s licenses, and ensuring a complete 2020 Census Count.

Position Responsibilities

  • Develop and drive an organization-wide Organizing Plan for NJCA that expands our grassroots and coalition membership, develops leaders, and that builds overall power for NJCA.
  • Update and manage online organizing and other digital tools that support organizing. Keep NJCA on the cutting edge of tools that support organizing.
  • Expand our capacity to raise funding from members, both individuals and partner groups.
  • Train and hold staff accountable to organizing goals contained in our Organizing Plan.
  • Recruit and develop leaders and spokespeople for the Student Debt campaigns outlined above.
  • Organize local events and other campaign related activity across New Jersey that build public support for the Student Debt campaigns.  

Qualifications include:

  • Minimum of six years’ experience in community, student, labor, tenant, church, and/or political organizing and at least two years of experience with electoral advocacy;   
  • Experience with databases, voter files, and online organizing tools;
  • Excellent writing ability; 
  • Great interpersonal skills for telephone and in-person;  
  • Car and valid NJ driver’s license and insurance required;
  • Experience with electoral advocacy preferred; and  
  • College degree strongly preferred.

Location: Highland Park, NJ.  

Compensation:  $50,000 + depending on experience. Attractive benefits package.
