Irvington NAACP Reschedules Candidates Night Forum Again

Irvington Herald — Thursday, February 20, 2014

By Chris Sykes, Staff Writer

It was deja vu all over again when Kathleen Witcher, president of the Irvington NAACP, announced the civil rights organization would be forced to reschedule its Mayoral Candidates Night Forum due to inclement weather.

"Dear NAACPers and friends, Gov. Christie has closed the state," said Witcher in an email blast sent the evening of Wednesday, Feb. 12. "Therefore, no Candidates' Forum will be held by the Irvington NAACP on Thursday, Feb. 13. Please stay tuned for details of a future date to be determined."

Witcher was unable to tell the Irvington Herald as it went to press this week exactly when the forum, which had already been postponed twice due to the weather, would be rescheduled. She did state that, due to the Irvington NAACP's crowded schedule, particularly during Black History Month, efforts had been made to stick to the original Thursday schedule; however, a previous commitment would make Thursday, Feb. 20, unavailable.

"On Thursday, Feb. 20, at 6:30 p.m., we're going to hold a Mortgage Fraud Workshop by NJ Communities United," said Witcher. "Come out to find out much more about the housing crisis. Invite others."

Witcher said the workshop would take place at Greater New Point Baptist Church, 60 Paine Ave., "off of Union Avenue," and the NAACP would also be offering its members and others free tax preparation by NJ Citizen Action. She said anyone interested in an appointment should call 888-829-3711 and anyone interested in services for older adults should call the Essex County Office at 973-395-8375.

"Today, Feb. 12, is the 105th anniversary of the founding of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People," added Witcher. "Join the NAACP and work for civil rights. Membership is only $30 for one year."

Witcher said anyone interested in learning more about the NAACP should visit the organization's official websites at and

"The Irvington NAACP invites you to get involved," said Witcher.
