Financial Literacy Workshops For All Ages Start Oct. 6

The Montclair Times — Thursday, September 29, 2011

United Way of Northern New Jersey has announced a free eight-week financial literacy series for the entire family that will share strategies for money management and planning at every stage of life.

For eight Thursdays, beginning Oct. 6, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., the United Way Family Success Center will provide families with separate age-appropriate courses covering budgeting, saving, investing and planning for the future.

The classes will be geared to three age ranges: ages 4 to 10, ages 11 to 18, and adults. Dinner will be provided to all participants. All classes will be held at the United Way building, 60 Fullerton Ave.

Each age group will follow its own curriculum to develop an age-appropriate personal financial plan during the span of the eight weeks. Each week, presenters will provide tips and advice on how to make the most of assets and avoid common pitfalls.

In addition, United Way will provide adults with specific courses on predatory lending, insurance and wills, credit repair, home ownership and foreclosure, tax preparation and college savings.

The first session, on Oct. 6, will focus on basic family budgeting. Families can attend all sessions or attend individual ones on topics of specific interest. For a listing of the topics, go to
