A Message To Congress

Letters to the Editor

For many of us, passing a strong health insurance reform bill tops the holiday wish-list.

The House passed a comprehensive reform bill that expands quality, affordable health care to 30 million Americans, reins in insurance company abuses, and creates a national public health plan that promotes competition, reducing costs for all.

Now it's time for the Senate to do the same.

Senators Robert Menendez and Frank Lautenberg have been champions for reform, and we need them to finish the job by making sure a strong bill passes this year. A recent report ("The Cost of Failure," September 2009) by the Urban Institute reports that, without reform, the average New Jersey resident would see health care spending rise by as much as 67.8 percent, and New Jersey public programs increase by up to 106 percent over the next 10 years. This doesn't include the human cost of 18,000 unnecessary deaths annually. The cost of inaction is simply too high.

I will be calling Senators Menendez and Lautenberg this week to thank them for past support and urge them to make sure the Senate passes a strong health care bill this December. Please do the same by calling the Capital Switchboard (202-224-3121).
