Trying to sign up for Affordable Care? Turns out, the federal website is so glitchy, trained navigators are helping uninsured New Jersey residents sign up using paper applications and the state's NJ FamilyCare website instead.

Maura Collinsgru, a health policy advocate with New Jersey Citizen Action, said last week during a conference call with reporters that the state website is working smoothly. More than 900,000 residents do not have health insurance; more than a third of them are eligible for coverage under the Medicaid expansion.

While there are no numbers yet about how many New Jerseyans have signed up for coverage, advocates want people to enroll now to avoid a backlog and coverage delays.

To complete an online application, visit www.NJFamilyCare.org or call (800) 701-0710.

To learn more about insurance plans available on the federal exchange, visit www.healthcare.gov or call (800) 318-2596. To find the nearest agency offering enrollment assistance, click on "Get in-person help in your community." New Jersey Citizen Action's Consumer Health Helpline can also help. answer questions and refer consumers to local navigators Call 1 (888) NJ GET WELL or 1 (888) 654-3893.
