MacArthur Not Representing People

Burlington County Times — October 1, 2017

Letter to the Editor

I am a constituent of U.S. Rep. MacArthur's Third District in Burlington County, and was one of a small group that was quickly assembled by the coordinated efforts of STNow Indivisible and New Jersey Citizen Action on Sept. 21st to bring our concerns yet again to our congressman regarding the GOP's efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act with a bill that would do untold harm to millions currently covered under the existing plan.

Such hasty planning to meet with Rep. MacArthur or his staff on Sept. 21st was necessitated by the expected and precipitous Republican action to (once) again attempt to ram through a proposal to a vote that is deeply flawed and unnecessarily cruel, and this was no doubt done intentionally for the purpose of restricting the number of protesters who would be available to participate in efforts to (once) again shut it down.

Neither Rep. MacArthur nor his staff was willing to meet with us, and this is absolutely telling in how apparently disinterested this congressman is in representing ALL, not just GOP-supporting constituents.

The Graham-Cassidy bill and its heretofore previous incarnations may have been defeated, but the GOP pledges to continue its efforts to "repeal and replace," in total disregard of the desires of the American people. Those of us who value quality and affordable health care for all will continue this fight, should yet another inhumane bill be proposed, but it is also of the utmost importance that local people who have not yet been in the trenches recognize that Rep. MacArthur poses an ongoing threat that must consistently be neutralized with respect to the health care battle.
