PATERSON, NJ — Paterson's historic Bethel AME Church will host a "community conversation" Tuesday on efforts to defeat teen addiction to drugs and alcohol through a three-step strategy known as SBIRT.

Starting at 6:00 p.m., the event, sponsored by New Jersey Citizen Action and Salvation and Social Justice, will feature a panel discussion with leaders including Assemblyman Benjie Wimberly, Paterson Public Schools Superintendent Eileen Shafer, and Maura Collinsgru, Healthcare Program Director at New Jersey Citizen Action.

Salvation and Social Justice, founded by Reverend Dr. Charles S. Boyer, is a faith based organization that "seeks to liberate public policy theologically by building faith-rooted communication strategies, advocacy, and perspectives, to lift up poor, underserved and traditionally oppressed communities with a particular focus on racial justice through abolition, restoration, transformation and coalition."

According to the invitation, SBIRT, is a drug and alcohol abuse strategy that consists of screening, brief intervention, and referrals to treatment that schools can use to help identify at risk youth and empower them to make better, healthier choices leading to a more positive future.
