A Million Doors To Open For Peace

Letter to the Editor

On Saturday, volunteers from all 50 states will contact more than a million people and ask them to sign a petition demanding that Congress and President Bush bring our brave men and women in uniform home from Iraq within one year. This day is called Million Doors for Peace.

The war has now gone on for more than five years. More than 4,000 Americans have sacrificed their lives, and more than 30,000 have suffered injuries – many maimed for life. Our communities are filled with men and women who have returned from the war with serious ailments, including post-traumatic stress disorder.

The cost of the war has been astronomical. Nobel laureate economist Joseph Stiglitz and Harvard economist Linda Bilmes report that the cost of the war will come to exceed $3 trillion. To put that number into perspective, just more than a third of the cost, or $1.2 trillion, could easily guarantee high-quality, affordable health care for everyone for the next 10 years, according to the Brookings Institute.

Of course, there are other reasons to bring the troops home. Our nation's reputation abroad is in tatters. Our military is strained to the breaking point. And we have serious needs at home that must be addressed, from health care and energy to basic infrastructure issues such as roads and levees and bridges.

This Saturday be on the lookout for your friends and neighbors. They'll be visiting you with a simple request. Give them your voice and help end the war in Iraq.
