Thanks To GOP For Equality Support

The Star-Ledger —March 26, 2016

Letter to the Editor

I commend the 11 Republican members ofthe New Jersey Senate and Assembly who reached across the aisle to vote with their conscience, helping to pass the New Jersey Pay Equity Act last month with strong bipartisan support.

Sens. Tom Kean Jr. (R-Union), Diane Allen (R-Burlington), Robert Singer (R-Ocean), Anthony Bucco (R-Morris), Christopher "Kip" Bateman (R-Somerset), and Christopher Connors (R-Ocean), along with their colleagues in the Assembly — Chris Brown (R-Cape May), Jack Ciattarelli (R-Somerset), Amy Handlin (R-Monmouth), Nancy Munoz (R-Union), and Maria Rodriguez-Gregg (R-Burlington) — understand that pay equity is not a political issue but a civil rights issue, for which there is only one defensible position.

With more and more women responsible for the financial support of their families, equal pay is not only a matter of fairness, it's also a matter of economic security for New Jersey families. It is unacceptable that this is still a problem in 2016, especially when it is within our representatives' power to do something about it. I hope Gov. Chris Christie recognizes pay equity for what it is— a basic economic right — and signs the bill into law.
