WomenRising, in collaboration with the NJ Coalition to End Domestic Violence and Hudson County Community College, is offering a free financial empowerment expo for women on Sept. 23.

The expo will provide financial strategies, resources and tools for women -- especially those who have experienced economic abuse -- and all who are interested in taking control of their financial future. It will be held at HCCC building at 161 Newkirk St. in Jersey City, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Knowledge is power and essential to addressing financial abuse, said Blanca Santana, director of youth and family services at WomenRising, a community-based organization for women in Hudson County.

Presentations will be offered on the following topics: surviving financial abuse, financial fraud and identity theft, consumer rights when dealing with debt collectors, building and repairing your credit, worker's rights to paid leave, money talk for parents, going from financial education to financial action, and crime victim rights.

Some of the presentations will also be offered in Spanish, officials said.

The expo and the financial empowerment program at WomenRising are funded by a grant from the Allstate Foundation, officials said. People can pre-register by calling 201-333-5700, ext. 521 or 516 to reserve your spot; registrations will be accepted at the event if space is available.

A Housing Resource Fair will be held Thursday, Sept. 15, at New Jersey City University in Jersey City to provide residents still impacted by superstorm Sandy with information about available housing resources, the state Department of Community Affairs (DCA) announced.

There will be informational tables hosted by participating community partners, including Active Staffing, Bayonne Economic Opportunity Foundation, Catholic Charities, Center for Women, Cuban National Council, Dress for Success, Domestic Violence Services, Hopes CAP, Hudson County Community College, Investors Bank, Jersey City One-Stop, Liberty Savings Federal Credit Union, Liberty Taxes, New Jersey Citizen Action, Northeast New Jersey Legal Services, Puertoriquenos Associados for Community Organization, Primerica Financial Services, Provident Bank, Rising Tide, Workforce Advantage, Workforce Development Training Program & Training Center, Victims of Crime
